The March exhibit at Justus Fine Art Gallery will feature a selection of new ceramic work by Michael Ashley and paintings by Katherine Strause, along with work by Taimur Cleary, Robert Fogel, Robyn Horn, Sammy Peters, Tony Saladino, Sandra Sell, and others. The show will open with a reception from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, March 1, in conjunction with the monthly Gallery Walk in downtown Hot Springs. The exhibit will be on display  March 1-31, 2019.

The exhibition will feature a series of Katherine Strause’s paintings that utilize vintage photographs as inspiration for her energetic, contemporary figurative work. In an essay by Dr. Laura Amrhein, Strause states, “…I approach these images as subject matter and create my own relationship with these individuals. These portraits possess a look of determination and hope. They represent us all.” Strause earned a B.A. in Visual Art from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and M.F.A. in painting from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. She currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Art at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

New work by ceramic artist Michael Ashley will also be showcased. The new pieces feature striking, painterly glazes in vivid colors, in concert with his sculptural forms. After graduating from the College of the Ozarks with a B.A. in painting and ceramics, Ashley completed a one-year residency at Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan. He came away from that experience with a greater knowledge of technique and form in functional pottery. Ashley completed his M.F.A. at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. He currently serves as an assistant professor of art at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri. He has also taught at Missouri State University, the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ashley’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions and collections, including the permanent collection of the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
